One of the reasons we feel our software suite is so different than anything created to date is because these online flash applications work together. Here is the first video of this concept in action. This shows Peacock, the pattern generator being used to create "microplanets," which are then laid out and blended into a peaceful sky seen in Phoenix, Aviary's flash image editor.

Just to explain what you're seeing in the first part of the video: It's a special object nicknamed microplanets, being created using Peacock's node-based filter system.
Microplanets is a new pattern filter just added to Peacock, in which a scene can be wrapped around a sphere. For example, this image:

For those of you without access to Aviary yet, you can sign up for the beta invitations to try out both Phoenix and Peacock at http://a.viary.com. If you're already in the beta, just leave a note in the Peacock thread to gain access.

Is "microplanets" really the most appropriate term for this node, or is it just a "rectangular->polar coordinates" transformation, with the ability to tile and offset the input before applying the warp? It just seems to me that "microplanets" doesn't convey the function of the node very clearly (in the event the input is not a landscape). I'm completely new to Aviary, and am perhaps unaware that all the Peacock nodes are "cleverly named", in which case, carry on!

Not specific to this post, but all the product posts. What tool are you using to do your video capture and sound edits? Are they a.viary tools or a combo of stuff? - Tom

Tom, the videos are produced using a combination of different tools, but are finalized in Camtasia Studio. And for the record, we *will* have this exact ability built into the entire Aviary suite. As a learning tool, it's invaluable.

Wow, this is all starting to look really great!! I really wish I could get access to try out Phoenix! ;). I can't wait for this to be finished and out for use...although I did hear(haven't even tried to verify yet) that Adobe was also starting to work on a set of Flash based apps similar to these you guys are working on. Everything I've seen so far looks like it will make so many things much more manageable and keep people sane when working from program to program. Keep up the awesome work!!

Graham, the effect node is actually called Polar, but there is a microplanets mode for it. Kolton, I hope so - the more tools and resources we get online, the less shackled we are to our desktop software!

Wow. This is really great! Keep doing more videos please, because it much easier to understand what the tools really do for those of us who don't have access. Do you have the other tools also ready to show, or are you guys still working on them? Will Aviary suite work offline on Adobe's AIR?

I'm also wondering about what Mardawi said. are you working on the other programs too, or is it just phoenix, peacock, and hummingbird? i'm really interested in raven, as well as, roc(which sounds like garageband) and horus. ive never even seen an application like that available. im really excited about that.

Yes, we're working on other applications simultaneously. We'll try to do videos for the other applications soon (though our current push is for tools that are usable by everyone). Some Aviary tools will work on Adobe AIR. Case in point, Raven will be ready sooner than you think. :-)
